I have been hearing it a lot lately-marriage exists only for a man and woman to get together and pro-create. It seems to be the reason most people are giving to not let gay people get married. So what about those couples who choose not to have children? What about the couples who can't reproduce? If you are on this side, should we require that individuals swear to pro-create and make them get fertility testing in order to get a marriage license? This may have been a good reason to get married at the beginning of time, but now it just doesn't make sense. Does it?

BTW, this is not my thinking. This is the thinking of some people and I am trying to understand why they would think this. I am pro gay marriage and pro gay adoption.

That's exactly what I think! They say that marriage is to procreate but what about the married couples who use birth control, can't have kids because of medical reasons or get fixed so they can't have any more kids! They shouldn't be allowed to get married either!
And by the way a lot of gay couples do procreate (just not the conventional way)!!

Marriage is an artificial construct created by humans, not at the direction of some God. With all the technology we have these days there really isn't a need to have sexual intercourse to produce children. The main reason people have sex whether they are straight or gay is for pleasure. Do heterosexuals only have sex to pro-create? Of course not. And as to to people who say that gays recruit because they can't reproduce - I say bullshit. There are many lesbians and gays who have children. Some children turn out to be gay some turn out straight. What is important is that the children be loved and provided for. Being heterosexual does not necessarily make you a better parent, marriage partner or person.

Marriage is not just so people can have children. People don't want to let homosexuals get married, because there are so many prejudices against them. Myself, I have a few homosexual friends and they have every right to get married just like heterosexuals do. There are also a lot of children that heterosexual couples are having and putting up for adoption. Now answer this, why can't a homosexual couple raise these children. I'm not saying we should just hand them the children, they need to go through the process just like everyone else. America is home of the free. What's so free if homosexuals can't get married and raise a family?

The answer to your question is simple: The purpose of marriage is not procreation; if it was, then infertile people such as men with vasectomies, women with hysterectomies, women with their tubes tied, men with their testicles removed, and women past their child-bearing years could not marry. There is no legal; i.e., constitutional, reason why gays cannot marry. The rationale people use is, unfortunately, based in religious dogma, and it just so happens for now, that people who use the Bible on which to base their entire belief systems outnumber the people who do not, and the Bible-wielding populous votes. Many people are realizing the above and have figured out that they need a better (secular) way of banning gay marriage, and they are using the term, "Because it's tradition that marriage has always been between a man and a woman." But this logic is flawed because this kind of "tradition" argument has been used in the past to rationalize slavery.

First you are right, it doesn't make much sense. Not only does it not make sense but they are trying to protect something that doesn't matter anymore. It is estimated that 2/3 of all marriages end in divorce. If we are truly protecting our country, its foundations, and it religious background then shouldn't we be trying to make marriages last, shouldn't there be laws for keeping people who are married together. Yes but the gay people around the world are trying ruin our country. The main problem is too many people are too scared to look at the real problems and in order to avoid them they make minor things seem bigger than what they actually are.

That is the beauty of our country, we pretty much have free will to live our lives as we wish. Sometimes fertility tests may be negative, but couples still conceive. Who are you or I to decide?
I sure don't want to be in control of all this. This is what governments and religions do to try and control the masses. If you have too many kids there won't be enough $$ left for their coffers.

The Catholic church of course is the one that wants procreation in a marriage period. You can't hardly get married in the church if you don't want children.

Flip the other coin tho - In China, people are limited to one child per couple because of overpopulation. Is that fair?

No, it absolutely doesn't make sense. Marriage may be considered a financial matter, and a reproducing agent or whatever, in the eyes of the government, but by now people marry for love mostly, and so that should be reflected in our laws.

You raised a very valid point and many closed-minded ppl would like to just assume that their point of view is the only point of view that has any merit, even though the whole principle of our country is to be able to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Many radical right-wing conservatives just feel that they have the right to determine how you should be able to pursue that happiness like it's any of their business, but that's the world we live in and it'll never be perfect. People always want to have control over other people's lives and to be able to try and impose their beliefs on the rest of the world. I really don't think the population of our planet is in any way becoming alarmingly low...don't feel we are on the verge of extinction unless we all blow ourselves up so what does it matter if couples (whether same sex or hetero) want to procreate?

Marriage is not only to procreate... but then of course it is one of the reasons why we got married. there is nothing wrong with couples getting married who can't procreate. For me marriage is the greatest bond me and my beloved can have. I am pro marriage because I believe in having one and only love and marriage is the only seal that seal our love forever... it is a way of saying.."hey everyone this is my love... I love him very much and to prove it i marry him because I want to spend my whole life with him"

Being Gay is morally corrupt but I guess in these times many people in general have no understanding of morality! The only thing many people value these days is instant gratification and they have no consept of consequences. One day people will understand that it may be normal to feel attracted to the same sex but that it is a sickness to be sexual with a person of the same sex!
