Congruence is a form of equivalence. If two triangles are congruent then they have the same angles. If two numbers are congruent modulo another number "n", then their difference is divisible by n.
A clock is an example of the second type of congruences. We don't keep track of every hour since we started noting time, but we say that 24 cong 0. If it's 13:00 on Monday and 13:00 on Wednesday, then these are considered the same time since the difference between these times is 48hrs and 48=2•24.
