That's a great question!

If we take a step back, we should ask if it's a good idea to set up ground rules for brainstorming, such as no ideas will be criticized. In general, older people tends to set rules of behavior for discussions. For instance, debates and discussions in Congress have strict rules, so it doesn't turn into a shouting match. Similarly, it is a good idea to set ground rules concerning the topic and framing the way it is to be discussed, so that everyone will be as focused as possible So, I believe it is a good idea to set up ground rules for both behavior and topical discussion.

Back to your specific question, a relatively new group is showing-up in Strategic Planning divisions at large corporations. They are called "innovation teams". Mostly, it's bunch of people that sits around brainstorming ideas. In corporate world and in real life, most brainstormed ideas is utter crap and are useless. Corporations were faced with the dilemma of too much criticism in the brainstorming sessions, whereby less and less ideas would be presented, because people feared criticisms. You will have the same problem occur too, where criticisms ruin creativity. I recommend that you set ground rules for criticisms, such as everyone at the brainstorming session must present two ways to make an idea work first, before present two criticisms of why it won't work.

The most important thing is really setting up the ground rules and STRICTLY ENFORCING THEM.

Good luck

Typically, no. "Brainstorming" is getting as many different ideas generated as possible, and recorded, so they can be looked at afterwards for viability. Often, you can get some silly answers, but "Brainstorming" usually has the approach that there are no 'bad' ideas... .just ideas to be processed.

There was once a group of people sitting around a table, at a company that made potato chips.... they wanted to figure out a way to stack the chips in a can.... after much thought, one engineer, cries out "I have it!!", and he proceeds to pound the chips into little crumbs, and then scoops them into the can....Judging from the quality of chips Ive seen in 'cans'... I think this must be the method they opted for... lol =D
