Rather than remote desktop, I recommend a product called VNC.
It's free, and installs in a snap!
It's also cross platform, so if you have a PC at home, you can bring up your home system on say a MAC at school.
If your home IP address changes often though, I suggest getting a free domain with dynamic resolver.
NOIP.com has a fantastic one.
When you get VNC, make sure you get REAL-VNC, and not some other virtual network computing software. There are many imitators out there now, and none are as good or as fast.

Right Click on My Computer then go to the remote tab to set up remote desktop.
You can then use remote desktop through MSN messenger OR if you search for remote desktop in the Windows XP help you can find an area that will make a file you can give people to initiate remote desktop with you. They will have to do the same thing so you can access them.
