They feel like they are in control of the situation, or are somehow better than everyone else. It gives them a sense of power, but actually shows how little class they really have.

Because they lack something in their own personalities and to make someone else feel bad makes them feel better, tho their feeling of superiority is only shortlived. They never seem to be truley happy, and deep down I believe they in fact are miserable people and we should all feel sorry for them......

I believe that it makes them feel superior when they get to hurt (emotionally) somebody but too bad, it just makes them a scum of the earth, lowest of the low.

I think it makes them feel empowered, like they put the other person in their place. They don't realize that it just makes them look like an idiot.
