A breastfed baby (and most babies who get formula, as well) should not get any water at least until they start solids (which should be between 6 and 12 months old). You don't *need* to give it until well after a year old when they are getting a lot less breastfeeding.
Giving a young breastfed baby water will fill them up (their stomach is only the size of their fists!!) so that they won't have the appetite for nutritious food *and* it changes the environment in their digestive system which can make it possible for nasty bacteria to grow (human milk *prevents* most bacterial growth). It is not harmless.

You should check with your Pediatrician, but I was told not to give water to baby while breastfeeding...because water will fill up baby's stomach and they will be less likely to breastfeed fully, which would cause the milk flow to decrease.
We did not give our baby water until he started solid foods (around 5-6 months)

You can give cooled, boiled water to a baby from birth. Some like it, some don't. Breastfed babies do not need water as the foremilk, which they receive at the beginning of every feed, acts as a drink and the hindmilk as food. Bottle-fed babies DO need a drink as formula milk is just a feed and not a drink. Offer bottle-fed babies water in between feeds, especially during hot weather.

There is no need to give a baby that age water at all. There are no calories or any significant value in giving a newborn water. Breast milk gives him everything he needs. Between 7 and 8 months is when it's time to start introducing juice if you so desire.

Babies don't need water before 6 months. Although, a little probably wouldnt HURT the baby, it is entirely unnecessary. The baby gets ALL the fluids it needs from breastmilk.

if you start giving him water just put a tiny bit of brown sugar in the bottle just to help him get used to the taste then as he drinks it more put less and less sugar in it.....they can start drinking water whenever but its best not to i think till there about 2-3 months that way they are getting what they need from the breast milk ie vitamins etc.....
