I saw it in a movie. Charton Heston in Soylent Green. On the wall of a building it said, in tryptic fashion,Today is Soylent Green Day. Is this where the band got it's name? Lemme know your thoughts. Oh, btw, Soylent Green is made of people...lol

I love that everyone just rattles off crap they read on a website...Anyways, Billie Joe has said that a "Green Day" is a day where you do nothing but sit around and smoke pot...and are too stoned to do anything else. There is a song called "green day" on their album "1,039 smoothed out/slappy hours" it kind of puts the whole thing into words...Billie's since said he hates the name, but it's too late now to change it.

The phrase "green day" is Bay-area slang for a day with lots of green bud where you just sit around taking bong hits, hanging around. Billie Joe picked the phrase up from friends while chilling in his "habitat" (in the basement of a Berkeley University building), and wrote the song Green Day about his first pot experience. The group changed their name from Sweet Children to Green Day in 1990. Note too that Ernie from Sesame Street has also uttered the phrase Green Day.

I once heard that Billie Joe was told by his high school counselor that it would be a Green Day in hell before he would ever amount to anything.
but the original answer sounds better.

No I saw them on a music video station here in Canada say it was a type of day in California (when they were in high school). They would skip school and smoke weed all day. But it could be both, who knows
