Hi, I have a question about a rather odd behavior of my hard drive. Periodically, my hard drive will produce a sound just like when you shut off the computer where the hard drive slowly stops spinning. then after a few minutes or when I try to open the drive content in windows explorer it will produce a sound that sounds like it's spinning up when you boot up the computer, followed by a few clicking sound after the spin up noise. (This also cause my computer to lock up for a few seconds as it's spinning up)

I'm puzzled, does my hard drives have a energy saving feature or something that I didn't intentinally start or do I have some feature in BIOS that I need to disable to stop this odd behavior.

Thank you very much.

The HD might be damaged. When a HD tends to start making noise especially if it has never done this before it is a sign of a problem. Common cause of this is a defect from the manufacturer or inproper handling of the computer (ie moving it around when it is on).

Try defragging your hard drive and deleting and limiting your temporary internet cache. If this doesn't work, the control circuitry on your hard drive is burning up or out of alignment. Back up all your necessary data onto an external storage and get a new hard drive.

I've seen this before. Back up your data now. The hard drive is going to die.
