I have a windows xp with slow dial-up. I understand that first I need to get some usb device, then install it and things just pop up? I am not even sure yet if there is a signal around my house. Can I buy the thing, test it, and then return it if I don't have any usable signals? Please explain the steps I would have to go through to set it up?

Thaks very much

If I am getting good service, and can find out which neighbor it is coming from, I have no problem canceling my dial-up and chipping in so that it lightens the load. But rather than go around and start asking random neighbors if they have wi-fi Id rather just find out for myself

There are devices available that can detect wi-fi signals. That might be a place to start. Your computer needs to have wireless capability. Most, if not all, new notebooks have built-in wireless, but desktop models need to have a wireless card installed. Even with all of that done and in place, that won't necessarily allow you access to your neighbor's signal. If he has had it installed by a professional, or even if he is semi-proficient with computers, he will have his network password protected to keep you out. In this case, you will detect his wireless network, but be unable to connect with it. You might approach him, and offer to pay half of the bill if he allows you access. As far as buying equipment, and then, returning it, most retailers have a "re-stocking fee" of 15% on electronics, so make sure you research store policies.

I had a Dream! One where (as long as they purchased a wireless network router) my little community would share my bitchin amount of band width and they would all be honest, and for the degradation in service that I got because they had all hopped on my bandwidth, they donated an amount somewhat close to their dialup rate. I was ok with it, it was a little slower at times, they were VERY happy and we co-existed like that UNTIL a thief moved into our neighborhood, and I don't know who they are but now I am forced to firewall and the thought of becoming a network admin person handing out passwords for my little community was not was this exercise was about. Now it was just a dream, but take from it what you will.

you would need a Wi-Fi networking card, and since its hardware you probly could return it within a certian peroid of days.. But if you do happen to find a signal its prolly not best to try and leech from it, 90pct of the time wirless networks are firewalled up the yinyang, and you wouldnt be able to access them anyway...But if you do happen to find one, Offer them what you pay for dial-up and see if you can posibly share...Signials prolly wouldt be great at more than 100ft, so hope they are close

I doubt they'd let you return opened hardware. It depends on the return policy though. Also you may be able to see your neighbors signal but it might be encrypted which would mean you wouldn't be able to use it. Also remember it isn't your signal so if it isn't encrypted using the signal is stealing and it isn't harmless. By using his signal you could slow down his connection...

If you use a wireless card to search for wi-fi is legal, but if you get connect to someone's wireless network without permission which is illegal.
It does not worth it to take this kind of risk. Why don't you just get your own DSL or cable connection?

I think you can do it, if he hasn't password protected his wifi? Get a wireless router & check it out (make sure to ask about router range!) I could be totally wrong, but my laptop does recognize the neighbors signal etc... You might even be able to check out what he's checking out...which would make you a peeping cyberhead
