I've seen a disturbing number of posts on Yahoo answers from young teens regarding sex & suicide and other dangerous issues. How do you respond (or do you) to these posts. I try to pray for these kids, but what can you say to a teen that will make a difference? (My kids range from newborn to 7 and I'm scared to death of their approaching teen years.)

I think the most important thing you can do to avoid the "fright" of the teenage years is to develop a constant and truthful communication with your kids, starting at an early age. If you talk to them regularly about things, they will be more apt to talk to you when they have a problem. And they will be less likely to believe their teen-aged friends claims that their parents "don't understand them." And always telling the truth is key here. So, if you haven't started talking to that 7 y/o, get started today (it doesn't really matter what you talk about...ask about his/her friends, what games/activities they like, what problems they are having with schoolwork...the more you talk, the more they will talk...and once you start, don't shut them out.

The teen years are stressful and depressing for a huge number of teenagers. As far as sex, I tell them that they are too young and that they should wait for that special someone. As far as suicide, I haven't seen any posts about that, but in person I just listen to them. Don't talk, just listen and try to help them understand things. Explain things to them. Tell them that people love them.

Teens often get into that negative/confused mindset when they lack information/knowledge about something like sex which is intriguing to them.

I think best way is to provide 'education' to them..explain to them it is natural & educate them about the related issues.

Regarding suicide, many of them talk or reach to that stage because they feel there is no one listening or no one with whom they can express the feeling. They feel death is the answer.Any consoling words & gestures can avoid that behavior.Remember it is a split-second urge to end life.We shud try to avoid that..

Honestly, I am not very surprised. , United States sadly have one of the highest depression rate. I would definitely tell them to get a professional/medical help. They should also do some self reflection to find out why they are feeling that way. Self realization and meditation is the way to go.

Answer openly and honestly. They are coming here for a reason. It's a cry for help. Don't pity them, just try to help. Be positive, be realistic, be compassionate and caring. Since it seems to be no one home to help, we are their lifeline. Don't ignore but embrace the chance to help a young one or anyone out.

Don't worry too much about it. Teenagers are so overwhelmed with so many different chemicals, they don't know what's going on.
