gurl we have been asking this question for 40 years and all we get is u r lucky that u aint still slaves. so as far as getting it, dont even think about it cause it aint going to happen. as far as dreaming about getting it, keep on dreaming. sorry to burst yo bubble but our black leaders are too affraid to speak up for us so that we could get this done. that is why we as a black nation dont get most of the respect that we deserve because our so-called leaders will not stand up for us as a people. makes me kinda wish i was born back in the day when martin luther king was handling things at least he stood up for us, even though we got dogs sicked on us and we were not allowed to eat in white resturants, i could have dealt with that better than today cause then they told u that they didnt want u, now the smile in your face and then stab u in the back. so good luck trying to get your 40 acres and a mule. p.s. if u do holla at me.

no. my grandma is Japanese, she got reparations, because she was actually in an internment camp. This country owed SLAVES reparations but they have all passed without the justice they deserved. This country owes nothing to young African Americans, who have enjoyed the same rights and privileges in our society. If you say they deserve it because of racism then they can join the club. What about Native Americans or Mexicans who were mistreated by our government...etc. Everyone is mistreated by someone in their life and now, 2006 the government has no control over it, unless it's illegal. The government can't force people not to hate on another.BTW in some parts of the world including Africa slavery is still an acceptable practice. However I think if you were a slave in the time it was legal in our government come and get it, you should be treated like gold. when that 140 year old person shows up, I'd REALLY love to meet them and bow at their feet for the injustice they faced.

Raynanne's article hit the nail on the head. I'll go a step further, too. If reparations are paid to blacks, then who's next? Will the Indian tribes be given back the land that was taken from them? Will blacks be forced to pay reparations to the Jewish for holding them as slaves centuries ago?
As for who would give reparations if they were given, you know it will come out of the tax money of every hard-working American taxpaying citizen, including those who are black, & place a further financial burden on the economy. After all, it isn't like the African countries who sold their own people into slavery are going to pay for American citizens who have never spent a day of their lives in the bondage of slavery to have an even better life than they already have, which they might not have if their ancestors weren't sold into slavery.
Being of Indian descent, I could argue my people deserve free land because my ancestors suffered the hardships of the Trail of Tears. However, if it weren't for their suffering, I wouldn't have things as good as I do today. If not for the fact America was taken over by settlers & modernized, we wouldn't be the world power we are today, & there's a possibility I might be off in the woods right now sleeping in a wigwam & getting ready to hunt for my dinner tomorrow, instead of goofing off on the internet right now. The same possibilities might exist for descendants of slaves in that their own lives might not be as prosperous as they are today if not for the unfortunate circumstances of their ancestors' arrival to the New World.
So, I don't think any reparations should be made to people who didn't suffer in the first place. The black community today has the same opportunities for advancement as any other group in the U.S. If anyone should give reparations to them, it should be they themselves who should, be repairing the mentality that would lead them to believe they deserve these hand-outs, which is the true name for "reparations", & work hard to excel in everything they do, as I believe most do & will. A few bad apples in every race spoil the bunch, & try to get something for nothing, but I believe most people of every race know that the best way to take pride in themselves & their communities is by being the best they can be, & doing what they can to better their overall condition. I hope I'm correct in this belief.

The past is passed. Get on with your future. The future is open to you now with no restrictions. Open every door possible and check out all your opportunities - you are blessed to be alive right now and living in this country where, with a little know-how and desire, you can make an excellent living in an honest manner. So many people chase rainbows, but believe me there are few pots of gold at the end of those. To be successful, just show up, on time and ready to go. Losers seldom to the first 2 and never the 3rd, so go out and make your own winning efforts. And for God's sake, don't give money to anyone who promises you that there may be reparations. It is most likely only going to benefit a few people's pockets but probably not yours.

I don't think so. If you give black's reparations than you open a whole can of worms for other ethnicities. EVERYONE will come to the table wanting their share! Anyone and everyone that was persecuted at some time will feel they are owed. Jews, Irish, Blacks, Native Americans....etc...So many people could claim harsh and unfair treatment in history. BFD. We are in a different era and we should concentrate on making our futures better instead of who owes who for what they did to whom in the past. (I also don't understand why folks are getting so pissed off at you for asking the question.....you weren't asking if YOU should get reparations)

sure, I do think of that black people nonetheless be afflicted by stigmas and a harder climb up the ladder of success, and that it stems from their ancestors being slaves. i think of that extra advantageous than a million/2 of it truly is now self-imposed, however. Do they deserve reparations, probable. ought to they get reparations, probable....yet i do no longer comprehend how those reparations could show up themselves. The community individuals are turning out to be reparations, and that i do no longer comprehend whether it truly is assisting them or no longer. i think of it probable is. I in user-friendly terms point out it as a factor of reference. Giving a traditionally oppressed team capacity or money often has outcomes that don't mirror actually on that team. the actual question is, how lots and with what proposed helpful consequence?

No. If you people would let this cramp died then every one could get alone better. You all seem to think that ALL WHITES HAD slaves and they didn't, only the rich could afford slaves and it doesn't mean that all whites agreed to the slavery even those in the south. You expect us to pay you back for something that didn't happen to you. It happen 150 yrs ago. GOOD LORD GET OVER IT. We didn't do it and besides how many of us do you think are full whites or full blacks now a days. Probably not every many.

No. The article that Raynanne has provided a link to in her answer has many good points.

Perhaps if you are passionate about the rights of those effected by slavery, you should try to help those who are less fortunate than yourself in third world countries in Africa. The impact of Transatlantic slavery there was huge. If you want to help you can do this by; raising money for relevant charities, writing to your government to ask them to intervene or going out to a country and physically helping.

Slave trades still exist; this is a charity website that addresses the issue; http://www.antislavery.org/

What about all the work I have done as a white man, with no help from anyone to build a business? My family never owned any slaves but I am supposed to pay your lazy butt just for having a black skin color? All of us have had ancestors that have suffered. Quit whining and work for your money like everyone else. You make blacks sound like a bunch of lazy beggars. What a disgraceful question.
