When a newborn dies from SIDS, does he/she struggle (for air, etc.) or convulse before death or does the child pass peacefully?

All the literature I have read does not address this question, which leads me to believe that babies pass away peacefully.

No. A baby who dies of SIDS doesn't appear to struggle or anything. They just don't wake up from a deep sleep. Many people (including some medical examiners and other doctors) confuse SIDS with suffocation, but they are entirely different. SIDS is death from *unknown* causes; suffocation is a *known* cause. Both SIDS and suffocation (from drowning in a puddle of vomit) are risks with sleeping on the stomach, which further confuses things...

I don't know, but from everything I've read, they just die peacefully while they're sleeping.

There are many ways to combat this though so it doesn't happen. Let the baby sleep on the back, put baby to sleep with pacifier, etc. Look up SIDS on babycenter.com

A SIDS death occurs quickly, and is often associated with sleep, with no signs of suffering. Most SIDS babies die while apparently asleep, but not all SIDS cases. Some babies were awake and alert when they died. The baby does not cry out.
Death happens quickly.

No one knows exactly what causes sids, but it is known that it seems to happen alot more with babies that sleep on their stomachs, leading some to believe that they suffocate. Your question cant be answered 100% positively.
