Large scale computers do quite a bit for businesses.
In your example of a grocery store, computer programs used keep records of what is currently unsold in stock and has been immediately sold each time a product is scanned at the register.
These programs also tally up the day's receipts, instantly taking out the "fair" share of state and federal taxes. And there's the employee payrolll issues there too: how many hours each employee worked (inculding overtime), their tax payments also figured out as well.
Then there's the over head costs: how much it'll cost to buy so many units of any displayed product, costs of business operation (electricity, water, natural gas.....etc). Then there's the business insurance costs as well.
All in all, computer programs can instantly figure out these totals far faster than people with trusty calculator, pencil and paper can ever do.

they make the jobs of the people there easier by tallying all the products and making customer service fast and also making it easier for the owner to tally all the products sold throughout the day....those programs are mostly custom made and can be bought easily..........

they would connect the front end user (cashier) to the database that contains all the relevant information on the product they are scanning. ie. barcode, price, stock levels etc.
