As a long-time rocker who lived through, and loved, the music of the 1950's, 1960's (especially!) and 1970's, I'd have to say that, for me, the 1980's was the beginning of a long, steady decline for the music industry across the board. The only artists to emerge during that decade that I liked, and still follow, are Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam & Chris Isaak.
Basically, Country kind of took over for me beginning in that decade.

metallica and James Hetfield. They turned the 80's from a hair band disaster to pure down home heavy metal. They changed they face of music for many years.

Thank you for asking...I got several, but I would say Phil Collins, Genesis, Go West, Survivor and Falco; by the way, Falco it's not just Rock me Amadeus, you know, he made a lot of music.
