I want to rekindle a long dormant passion for art. Somehow, somewhere along the way, my interest dwindled. Not enough encouragement? Not enough talent? Maybe life just got in the way? I'm not really sure why. But it's still there. Buried deep. I feel it whenever I look at beautiful illustrations from artists I admire. But sometimes, I say to myself 'What's the use?' Everything seems to have been done before. And the more talented do it better anyway. So I don't really develop it that much. Any advice?

It may have been said/done before, but has it been said/done by you? Art is about the relationship the doer has with the medium, and also about the relationship the viewer has with the finished piece. It is a process. And it is ONLY yours! You and what you create, and the statement you make (whether the statement is large or minute) may have a profound impact on someone who is viewing your artwork. Just pick up your brush, pencil, whatever you choose, and start with a doodle. Trust yourself, even though you may not know where you will end up. It will always be the right thing!

I have felt the same about photography. I still love it just as much as I did when I was younger....But sometimes, yes, life leads us in a different direction. The good thing is that the passion is still there. No one can copy what you have in your imagination because as artists we all see something different. It is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Only you know what beauty is to you, and you should share that with the world...Not all dreams just die...they rekindle....This is a sign that you should pursue your dream...Go for it!!!

maybe somewhere along the way you decided that if you couldn't be the VERY BEST, there was no point.

But think about this. Let us say that Michelangelo was the greatest artist. If every other artist quit or got discouraged because he couldn't be Michelangelo, we would only have 1 artist. Only 1 style. Not much art in the world.

Please make your goal to be the best artist YOU can be, by practice and study.

If no birds sang except those that sang best the woods would be quiet or something to that effect. Art is an expression of your soul and expression is not about being different or the best. It just Is. Go right ahead and experience your creativity If nothing else you will be a happier person and more fulfilled. Create.

You gotta just keep striving to be better every day. Whether it be with art or anything else that consumes life, as long as you have determination and a will to succeed, you'll always come out on top because of the character you build while working hard. Good luck!

If it makes you feel good then do it for yourself. Take some classes or just start sketching. Try different mediums, paint, pastels, watercolors, chalk, charcoal, clay. There are so many things you can do. Try them all and express yourself. If someone else likes it great but art really has to come from within.
Have fun. Best of luck.

There is a creativity that is beyond art--perhaps that's what you really want. I think you've answered your own question--it HAS all been done before. Real creativity has little to do with ideas in art, and something within you may recognize that fact. Paintings, songs stories--they can be very attractive because we identify our own emotions in them. Go ahead and paint, if you like; you might come upon something beyond that, if you look for it.

get out there, start working on it, go to museums, get that spark to be a flame. If you want something even something you love, it's still sometimes feels like work, but it's worth it. take a class, I'm sure your local community college offers art classes to help you get back into the swing of things.

Use art not as something that nags at the back of your mind but as a catharsis. Be an artist for yourself, for your own personal well being, and Art will be all that it should be for you.

Never give up on your dreams! Art is a gift that not all have! You are as good at it as you allow yourself to become! It is never a waste of time! Never compare yourself to others! Just relax and allow your creative energy to flow wildly and freely!
