Microsoft doesn't do a good job at killing a zombie process sometimes. Usually using the task manager to kill it will result in another process to try to kill it but it's not guaranteed that the killer process will succeed. But eventually it will just keep trying. If all else fails, reboot.

Sometimes a running file in the program freezes. To solve this: hit CTRL + ALT + DEL. Click on the program, then click "End Now". Usually, doing it through the task manager solves this problem. It may take a minute though, especially if other running files are using alot of memory. You just have to wait it out and if it still doesn't end, you can try to locate the ".exe" file by reopening the task manager and clicking the tab "Processes". Scroll through the list and end files that run the program (example: wmp.exe, sims2.exe).

If all this fails, restart the computer. Also, be on the lookout for spyware/adware. Scan your PC with a free program such as Yahoo! Anti-Spy or Windows Defender http://microsoft.com

if it doesn't close after waiting for a few minutes, restart the computer. It's because your cache is full and can't perform any more tasks.
