in the comics John Stewart was selected by the Guardians as Hal Jordan's backup after Guy Gardner was seriously injured in a disaster.

there were slight issue between hal jordan and stewart but he proved him self worthy by However, Stewart soon proved his worth. when an apparent African-American assassin shot at the racist politician they both assigned to pro tech, But Stewart refused to intervene with Jordan to move in response to the attack. However, Stewart had good reasons for this apparent derliction of duty when he stopped a gunman from killing a police officer in the outside parking lot at the event while Jordan was pursuing a decoy. When Jordan confronted Stewart for his actions, Stewart effectively explained the situation of the ruse and the fact the politician staged it for political advantage. With that adventure, Jordan concluded that Stewart was an excellent recruit after all.

now the thing here is with in the Tv animated series justice league and JLU, When Bruce Timm first announced the lineup for Justice League, there was a good deal of commotion over the choices of John Stewart and Hawkgirl. [citation needed] Regarding Stewart, the first complaint was that he had been included simply to have a black man on the team. Fans were angered for one of two reasons; they were not including the "real" Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, or they were not keeping in line with the continuity established in Superman by including Kyle Rayner. Timm did admit that one of the reasons for Stewart's inclusion was that he brought diversity to the team, but also felt that Stewart was a more interesting character (arguably, Jordan was too much of a square-jawed überhero and Rayner would be too similar to their Flash). Timm was fond to point to Dennis O'Neil's original incarnation of the character, who was an angry and edgy character, and it was from that position that they ran with it. They felt a character like this would bring conflict and interesting stories to the show. In addition, Stewart's being lesser-known amongst the Lanterns allowed the writers to shape the character more freely as they saw fit. Despite these explanations, some fans still complained about Stewart being there and Jordan not. (Jordan would later appear in the JLU episode "The Once and Future Thing, Part 2: Time, Warped". As a victim of a time alteration/shift, Stewart actually transforms into Hal Jordan for a scene or two before turning back. If he was used in the series, he'd be the one to recruit Green Arrow.)

any way the point is this was to show more diversity with this super hero Team. something that Marvel comics does try to have a lot of. mare t then DC did in the past. and was succeding in it.

As you can see here in this link by posters that read Marvel comics. http://mutanthigh.com/smf/index.php?topic=1062.0

And Mr. Bruce Timms was show caseing that for Dc's "animated universe" to put them in the better light and show that they can actually do that too as well.

And besides at least you wont get the same type of complaints as you saw with the tv show friends. and John Stewart was full member, not token like people like to complain about or just say as past comment as an insult for other shows or just about anything else media wise, when some one like him is added later.

He came at the beginning which refreshing for a change.

I hope that answers your question.

The Green Lantern Reynolds portrays, Hal Jordan, pre-dates John Stewart in comics by about 30 years. Jordan's replacement was Guy Gardner, and Stewart was Gardner's, and then even Kyle Rayner was Stewart's. The Green Lantern you're thinking of, Stewart from the JL cartoon, is in the middle of these guys. Hal Jordan, the character in the film, was the first human inducted into the Green Lantern Corp and has always been known as the greatest of the Green Lanterns. Edit: Also, Hal Jordan is the current Green Lantern.

You are talking about John Stewart. He was the third or fourth human to star as Green Lantern. The first was Alan Scott, who wasn't a member of the Green Lantern Corps, but was the first to bear the name, & is the original, Golden Age Green Lantern. Second & most famous is Hal Jordan. He was the first starring Green Lantern who was a member of the Corps. Other human Green Lanterns have included Guy Gardner & Kyle Rayner. There are also numerous other Green Lanterns in DC from alien races. Among the alien Green Lanterns who have been featured are Kilowog & Sinestro (yes, Sinestro used to be a Green Lantern, & actually trained Jordan). I recommend the second site I've listed for a lot of Green Lantern information.

The classic Green Lantern was Alan Scott. He was a white male. ]This was during the Golden Age]. While his name WAS Green Lantern, he wasn't an official Corps member, since he built his ring and lantern on his own. Though, that was later fixed, stating that the Guardians were responsible for the power his ring had. It was powerful, but had no effect on wood.

Later on, during the Silver Age, DC decided to make a new Green Lantern. Hal Jordan was a test pilot who got his ring from a dying alien [whose name escapes me at the moment]. As Earth's first OFFICAL Green Lantern, he helped found the JLA. This particular ring had an impurity that made it effective against anything that wasn't Yellow. The reasoning for this was later explained in Green Lantern: Rebirth.

The one a lot of us are really familiar with is Kyle Rayner. He pretty much recieved his ring by being in the right place at the right time. Though not quite as cut out for the job as Hal was, he still made a damn fine GL.

Finally, John Stewart. He's the GL on the Justice League cartoon. For a while he was a replacement/backup GL for Hal Jordan [as was Guy Gardner, despite his goofy haircut and costume], and eventually took over after Hal quit.

Green Lantern was originally white. Hal Jordan Airforce test pilot. The ring passed to John Stewart (black guy) for a while before going to Guy Gardner then to Kyle Rayner. Right now I believe they are all green lanterns

In the comic books there are all kinds of people/ aliens/ animals that were apart of the Guardians of the Universe. The most known green lantern "Kyle Rayner" did appear to be white. This is the one that went on to join the Justice Leauge.

Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner are all white.
John Stewart is black

And don't forget Jesse Lynn Hayden, Alan Scott's daughter, who has Green Lantern like powers and was know as Jade. She was green.
