The Catherine wheel (also Catharine wheel, pinwheel) is a type of firework consisting of a powder-filled spiral tube, mounted with a pin through its centre. When ignited, it rotates quickly, producing a display of sparks and coloured flame.

The firework is named for the wheel on which St. Catherine was martyred.

Everybody has given you the answer already, but I'm just gonna be oblivious of that and tell you that a Catherine Wheel is a type of firework.

Would you like to know what we call it?

Even if you don't want to know: we call it a zonnenwiel (sun wheel)

in addition to a type of firework, it is also an old-fashioned game of tag, more easily played in winter when you can stamp a path out in the snow. players would stamp out a path in the snow, resembling a wagon wheel, sometimes with one or more "inner rings" in addition to the outer ring that would be the wheel and any number of "spokes". the inner hub would be home where a person was safe from being tagged, but only one person could be home at a time, players ran around the catherine wheel, following the paths, trying to either tag or avoid being tagged
