how do you prevent mold from growing on the soil? Should you water a store bought plant as soon as you get it home or leave it a while?

Um, no. Probably not. Bonsai are normal plants that are artificially dwarfed by restriction of the roots. So the plants already have one "problem" that is "preventing" them from growing. No light would be strike two. Many of the plants commonly chosen for bonsai work are those with small leaves, so they look more in proportion to the pots. Most plants with small leaves prefer sunny spots. Plants that prefer shady spots grow big leaves to catch more light. But you never know, you could prove me wrong if you want to install some artifical light.

Prevent mold by letting the surface of the soil dry out or put it in more sunny location. Water the plant when the soil is dry to the touch just under the surface. Water enough to get some dripping out of the bottom and then let the plant dry out some before watering again. Too much water can be a fatal condition.

bonsai must not be watered .only sprayed with a atomizer water spray ,just the humidity is all that they need ,it is something that is growing in a restricted way
.
in Nature we find natural Bonsai that grow in rock pockets where their roots are restricted and where is almost no water

it would do well in the bath room ,but with a grow lamp and the humidity of the bath room is enough to keep it alive.

A money plant should work pretty well. But I'm not sure if technically that's considered a bonsai.
