A "Mom and Pop" store is a term that refers to a small family owned business, as opposed to a large chain such as WalMart, Target, etc.

small stores often run by a husband and wife.. but not always,
really any smaller store which is not a chain or big box store.. oddly sometimes these stores have better prices because they will have LOWER overhead.
They are better for the local economy becuase they dont send profits to "head office" in other state or other country...
Several small 'mom and pop' stores employ as many people as one big chain.. however the chains like to promote themselves as being better employers.. however they forgot to include the fact that now they have run the mom and pop stores out of business so mom and pop are also out of work....

mom and pop store often have better knowledge of their products, staff is more helpful...
but sadly people are shopping more at the big stores and the small ones are closing down
