From what I heard way back the members of the band were writing a song, or trying to and someone asked what time was it. It was 25 or 26 minutes to four o'clock. Thus the inspiration for the song. Great music, they were really good. My fav is Does anyone really know what time it is.

Acid heads are obsessed with the idea that this song is about drugs. It's not. It's about being up all night with writer's block, trying to write a song. Robert Lamm, writer of the song, looked at the clock and couldn't tell if it was 3:35 or 3:34 a.m. 25 or 26 minutes until 4 a.m.

In between tour dates in August 1969, Chicago had found the time to record its second album. One of the first songs Lamm brought in for the album was "25 Or 6 To 4," a song with a lyric Chicago fans have pondered ever since. What does that title mean? "It's just a reference to the time of day," says Lamm. As for the lyric: "The song is about writing a song. It's not mystical."

It's a song, about a guy being up all night trying to write a song. But, many, take the lyrics as meaning something else.
