I have windows xp. All of a sudden, my drive stopped detecting my devices. For example, I plug my camera in and nothing comes on the screen like it used to.

At one time, my computer could read all of my usb devices. now it doesn't detect anything. I've tried my usb mouse, and two different card readers.

Possibly the driver for your camera has become corrupt. I would suggest reinstalling your Camera USB driver software if available.

If this is a USB built into the computer, the cable that connects the USB to the Motherboard may have come loose inside the system and may have to be reconnected. This happend to me on one occasion and reconnecting the cable inside the system fixed it.

Also check the Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers (That is what USB stands for) and see if there is any Exclamation points, on the devices, this means there is a corruption. The troubleshooting wizard might help you from there.
To get to Device Manager. Right-Click MyComputer ->Properties-> Hardware -> Device Manager

Check your camera on someone else computer, if it detects it on their PC then it's the computer and not the camera, in which case:

It's possible that you need to clean the port. If you are always unplugging and plugging than the port may have just worn out. Device Manager will tell you it's working properly and it is, but what you are plugging in just isn't making contact. IF your ports are internal you may need to get an external USB card, or replace your card.

Maybe you plugged it into a drive which is not High Speed?

To see if your hardware is being recognized, go to
Start>Run and type 'sysdm.cpl' without the quotes

Click the 'Hardware' tab and select 'Device Manager'

Look at the bottom of the menu and find "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and click the + sign, if you see any Universal Host Controllers double click them and see if the device is working properly, if need be, select "Use This Device" if is not already enabled
