I currently live in Egypt and I have 5 really ornery children.
Since we don't have a local WalMart or a lot of the convenient cleaning products available here that we had in the States, we've had to improvise.
I have found that the only thing that worked to remove permanent BLACK marker from a white wardrobe was Tide washing powder and a wet steel wool pad. Just rinsed with a wet towel.
Worked beautifully and I had both items in stock under the sink!

Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You can usually purchase a 2-pack for around $2.50 or less. These are the only things I have found to remove permanent marker from any items, metal, wood, etc.

Try running over the permanent marker stain with a dry erase marker. Then wipe it off with a soft cloth. If it comes off a little then repeat till it's gone. It always works on dry erase boards and occasionally other surfaces too. The neat part is that the dry erase marker should always come off even if the stain doesn't.

You can try using another permanent marker and rubbing it off immediately or you can try those Mr. Clean Magic erasers. Those work wonders on walls and anything white. I use them all the time to get marks and scuffs, and all.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Test it in an unseen spot to make sure it won't harm the paint finish.
