i am just wondering how one could lessen the shock the news would bring

Why would there be shock? I hope that they have met this person!
You shouldn't expect the worst! This is a wonderful celebration! Go to dinner, or have them over to dinner with you and makeit a special night.
If you parents are old fashioned, then maybe you should consider having your husband to be, talk to them first. It is your decsion in the end, but having him make the right steps will help to have family harmony.

Her parents shouldn't be shocked. There is something more pressing at hand than her getting married isn't there? Finding out their daughter is getting married isn't supposed to be shocking.

My mom and his step dad just happened to be there when we got back from getting the ring. I just walked up to my mom and help out my hand to show her my beautiful diamond. She was happy for me. We got married about three years later. Why would they be shocked, unless you are very young? Congrats!

if you are at age and he is a good provider then they should be happy for yall but if he someone who is a pimp a woman beater a pretty boy who want work then then they should be up set and please make sure he is not a child molester good luck
