My rear tire is rubbing against the metal bar by the petals. I'm not real knowledgable on this stuff but I was thinking if nothing else maybe the rear wheel bearings were bad. Is this the case or could it be something else

It's usually because you ain't got the wheel bolted on straight, so it's like / instead of |

Flip the bike upside-down, slacken off the nuts, push the wheel back away from the metal so it's straight, then gradually tighten the nuts back up a bit at a time on either side until it sits straight (e.g. left side so it's finger tight, then the right, then tighten the left with a spanner, then the right..... if the wheel starts pointing other than straight as you tighten one side, then tighten the other..... repeat until the wheel is straight + the nuts as tight as they'll go without cracking off).

Most likely, your axle is crooked. Easy fix: loosen the nuts that hold the back wheel on and make sure that the axle is seated all the way in the openings (called dropouts) Tighten up good and there ya go!

Usually when that happens it's because one of the screws that hold on the rear tire (or both of them) loosened up and the tire slipped out of alignment.
The easiest way to fix it is usually just to take off the back tire and then put it back on.
(I know, sounds stupid, but it usually works)

Try pulling or loosening the metal bar. Sometimes they're more flexible than they look.
