Of course Superman would have to travel back to the time he was Superboy in order to accomplish this feat. Would they know each other?

Depends which Superboy and Superman. The pre-Crisis Superboy was capable of defeating the post-Crisis Superman in their team-up in Action Comics, and in the recent Infinite Crisis the Earth-Prime Superboy was more powerful than two Supermen.

in the comics, superman has had to set straight superboy a handful of times, and he did it without any real threat.

um... neither...
if superman defeats superboy (ie kill him) there would be no superman..
plus they are the same person.
they can not be in the same place at the same time otherwise they will destroy the balance of time and ultimately destroy the world
