It will turn black and fall off on its own, do not pull it off. What you are describing is completely normal.

First of all congratulations on the new baby, aren't they wonderful!! Don't worry about the cord.. It will turn black and fall off.. Where it is green is where it is still moist. Take a cotton ball with some alcohol on it and dab it on the green area to enhance drying... NO it won't burn, it is not an open wound... trust me, I am 49 years old and have raised 3 children and did this procedure with all of them and my children have done it to my grandchildren.. it works... And it WAS recommended by my doctor, it also wards off infection and keeps the area nice and clean.... I promise it won't hurt, it's just a little cold on the baby's skin... Sometimes the cord will hang by a string like you described and when it comes off there is still a little chunk that hasn't come off yet, it will. My doctor recommended that I actually push the skin back gently around the cord so the alcohol can get closer to the skin... Good luck to you and your new little one.. I hope I have helped, don't worry, all is ok...

The cord normally will fall off between 10 to 14 days. It will be dark and hard. A friend said it looks like beef jerky, and even though that sounds weird, it's pretty accurate.
Continue to clean around the base of the cord with alcohol and a q-tip several times a day. It will fall off on its own. Don't be scared about touching/cleaning it. It doesn't hurt the baby to clean it.
And don't worry, every first time mom is a nervous one!

Use an alcohol pad to clean the area or a q-tip with rubbing alcohol on it.
Do this gently while holding on to the cord.

Your baby is probably fine dont worry, but a way to tell is it will be hard and if i remember correctly a deep purple.

make sure you do not give your baby a full bath till the cord falls off and fold the diaper down below the belly button.

The cord will be black and dry when it falls off.

Keep the cord as dry as possible. No tub baths until the cord falls off. Swap with alcohol at every diaper change. If there is drainage or a foul smell coming from the cord, call your pediatrician.

It will turn black or a bark brown and it is normal for it to be green my daughters was when it was hanging from a string. Whatever you do don't pull it off it will fall off by it's self eventually. Just keep cleaning it with alcohol pads. It will be fine don't worry. good luck and congratulations !

It looks mostly black. It may look like a toe nail gone bad. It gets hard and starts to curl. Before it falls off, don't forget to use alcohol around the base.

It will fall off when it dries out. Keep cleaning it with alcohol every time you change your child's diaper. The entire chord will be an ugly dark black color when it falls off... I hated this part...my mom was an angel to be there to calm me down too... Good luck and congratulations on your new bundle!!!
