get ready EARLY. i mean start your sale at 6 am. people will show up around then anyway, even if you advertise 'no earlybirds.' the people that show up then are the ones who want a good selection and will pay.
the last sale i had, i made 2/3 of my money from 1 hr before i opened until 1 hr after i opened.
mark things clearly, some people are shy about asking for prices.

whenever you have something to sell you need to addvertise it gets your message out to a much greater number of people,i sugest an add in the main newspaper and sometime you can put a sign up in a local shop, dont forget most people are looking for a bargain, so your asking price must reflect this, allso be prepared to bartere, people attending theses sales love this, make sure you lay your desplay so things can be easily seen and make sure they are clean,i hate it when people expect you do buy something thats been tucked away in the garage or loft for years and is filthy, have plenty of change on hand and some bags, allso paper to wrap breakables in,have i few helpers not only to serve when busy but to watch out for thives, they attend theses sales as well, hope you have a good sale

Advertise. People won't come if they can't find it. Have "stuff" presented as neatly as is practical. Set major items out front on the grass so people driving by are attracted to back up and shop.

have change ready, a big hat or umbrella for sitting out for several hours and never stay out past 1pm-be done with it and take yourself out to lunch-you deserve it!
Oh, and music really helps...puts people in the mood to spend.
