If he only wants to spend 5000 on a BMW then tell him to buy a real nice life size model. Cause for that price that is all he will get. He will only get a old used one with at least 135,000 miles and it will be worn out. He will then constently pump money into her to keep her running. BMW and most luxury cars are not able to be worked on by normal mechanics, Midas, Tuffy, Firestone type of repair shops. They must go back to the dealership or you risk massive repair bills to fix what the other shop did.
A friend didn't listen to me on this and got himself an old 750i. He paid 3800 for the car. He has driven it just 2 weeks in 6 months. The rest of the time it has sat at the mechanics getting 4000 in work done to it. What could cost that much? Just a radiator, plug wires and brakes.
Unless you are a certified BMW mechanic, to own one out of warranty period is past foolish.
If he wants an older luxury car tell him to look at the older ES300's (aka toyota camry best car out there) or even a Audi 4. Past that most luxury cars are just bottomless pits by a certain age.

Hi there,
The key to buying a used BM is to buy a good one. Few notes that may help
1 Look for a service history
2 In general, keep away from the exotics such as the 7 or 8 series, M models and any with bigger engines. Go for the more common models such as the 3s. These can usually be maintained by most garages. Parts will be more easily available and cheaper.
3 Don't rush into it and buy the first one in your price range. Wait for a good one
4 Check out sites such as roadfly which offer pre-purchase advise on things to check out
5 If you find a possible model, post some details here for advice
Hope this all helps

you could get a very clean e30 shape recommend 325is or e30 325 convertible, or an e36 for 5 in decent condition. but dont buy a salvage title bmw with cheap rims for 5000 because it looks good chances are it drives like ****. i'd go with the trusty old e30 not very many people like the way it looks but...its a very realiable cheap to maintain bmw.

I bought a 1984 BMW 318i for $900.00
Parts for these cars can be expensive but they are fun to drive.

if he doesnt want to spend ove $5000 because it all he can afford he may want to reconsider and buy something cheaper to repair unless he is a mechanic.
