People have reacted to that elusive smile in many ways over the years; the smile changes & disappears at different angles. Her eyes are said to change with the angle of the viewer also. People say it's romantic, shy, ironic, sly & on. Leonardo was known for the smiles of his paintings - I heard that he employed musicians and others to amuse Mona Lisa so she would not have the sad expression that other painters of the time tended to give their subjects. I also heard that Freud thought it might just be the smile of Leonardo's mother.

Some people believe that the Mona Lisa is a self-portrait and the smile is Leonardo laughing at us. If they are right, this is the greatest practical joke of all time!

The evidence they use is that (1) the identity of Mona Lisa is unknowns, although all of Leonardo's other portrait subjects are known, (2) Leonardo's one known self-portrait is a good match for the features of the Mona Lisa and (3) the name of the knots in the brocade of ML's blouse are a pun on the name Leonardo.

Leonardo was prone to pulling practical jokes.
