Acoustic is more 'honest'
It really depends on who's playing it though
electric has different techniques, but between, effects and amplifiers, are you playing the guitar or playing the amp?

Hi , I disagree with some of the others. Some of the electric components do affect the sound in my opinion, but it depends on the setup and the guitar. Ive seen professionally installed pickups make a good acoustic sound a bit deader, but many times it doesnt matter. If you are using a low quality acoustic guitar now as youve said, almost any decent acoustic electric will sound good to you. Im a bit fussy and I prefer a solid wood guitar to laminates because of the sound. It also depends on what sound you like as many factors afffect the sound including body style. From what you are saying Im going to go out on a limb and suggest you try some Taylors. You can get a nice acoustic electric Taylor for under 1000. Good luck

It depends on what kind of music you enjoy playing. As a guitar player, i find that acoustic can be convenient because you can take it with you wherever you go and still be heard. However electric has more options such as wah pedals, amps, distortion pedals, etc. With electric you can also turn it up as loud as you need to (with the help of a loud amp) If you are on a budget i would say go with acoustic to get the ropes down. The best bet (if you have the money) is to get an acoustic/electric guitar; something like a telecoustic. It's the best of both worlds.

As others have said, depends upon the music and musician but I find a great musician can make an acoustic sound as good as a good player with a electric IMO.
Another good argument for country listeners is which is better, acoustic guitar or steel guitar (with one artist actually making what he calls a guit-steel .. he made a 12 string that is 6 string electric and I beleive 6 spring steel guitar... Name is Junior Brown)

Depends on the sound you want. Electric is easier to learn on, or at least, I thought it was. Not to mention, there is the fun with distortion and volume. On the other hand, simplicity especially for a folk piece is all about the acousitc. Personally, I prefer the SOUND of the acoustic, but prefer to PLAY electric.

Electric. Has an addictive sound, nonstop ability to play almost anything, weird noises, loud hardcore high-pitched chords, and the ability to control the sound, and even add reverb, pedals, or synths to make an even weirder, cooler, extraordinary sound.

i prefer electric because it gives a more solid sound, and you can control how loud it is.
