I have never dyed clothing before. I want to put the black back into some faded clothing. My stainless steel double kitchen sink looks like the perfect place. Is this a mistake ?

No, it won't stain. Just wash it out with soap afterward before it dries and you won't have any problems.

Technically the stainless steel sink won't stain.

However, if there are any imperfections in the sink the dye could stain it.

Use a big plastic bucket instead.

I don't know about the sink, but I tried dying some black items once because they had faded, and it took FOREVER to get the excess dye out of them! I had to always wash them separately afterwards because I knew they'd turn everything else black. Also, even though they were darker, they didn't have the same intensity and brightness of newly-bought clothes.

No way, if it does leave any thing behind, stainless steel is so easy to clean, just pour some bleach in it and scrub, but you don't have to put a whole lot of strength into it if you use something scrubby.

It can, it's considered an acid stain. I've used Dylon fabric dye in my sink and it's left behind a mess that won't clean off with just soap or with bleach. RIT dyes so far haven't done this to my sink, but be careful.
