If by prehistoric, you mean an animal that existed during prehistoric times and interacted with prehistoric man, then yes, absolutely, wolves are prehistoric animals. In fact, most animal species alive today are prehistoric animals by this definition.
If by prehistoric, you mean an animal that went extinct during the megafaunal extinction at the end of the last ice age (like wooly mammoth, sabre-toothed cats and giant ground sloths did), then wolves are not prehistoric because they still exist today.
One species of wolf that lived in North America during 'prehistoric' times and went extinct at the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago was the dire wolf (Canis dirus). It was a large, chunky wolf with massive teeth that probably scavenged much like the hyenas of Africa do today.

Wolf-dog crosses are most definitely, nothing new. Ancient fossil records show us wolf-like animals have been around since prehistoric times, and written descriptions by early visitors to North American Native peoples tell us these wolf-like animals have a very important role in society and the development of types of dogs.
The earliest fossil records of wolf-dogs, dated at about 8000 B.C., were found at the Agate Basin site in Wyoming. From the Horner site, a jawbone of a wolf-like animal was found. As late as the seventeenth century, similar bones were also recovered
But, wolves r descendants of these animals above ^
so they are prehistoric if you look at it o.O

I'm pretty sure they are. I once read that ancient man breed the strongest and smartest and unflawed wolves together so that they could be our companions. And thus the domesticated dog was born.
