I believe a passport is valid for 10 years...that would expire December 31,2006.

A passport is normally good, as an adult, for 10 years from the original date of issue. Two questions would be, when was the passport originally issued and what type of passport was it? Most likely, it was not issued the same year you had it taken away so it would be expired by now regardless. I am not very familiar with military IDs but I am guessing your passport was linked with your military IDs in some way or they wouldn't have taken it. Since it has been some time since discharge, you will probably have to fill out an application for a new passport versus a renewal and provide all relative info (ID, birth certificate,etc). You can get an application at major post offices. Be sure to check with them on details because they change the rules all the time. Just give your self several months before you plan a trip, for your passport to be processed.

check with these folks as far as questions on your previous passport. it could have been an official passport issued as part of government service and had to be returned on discharge.this is the contact number for the passport center. their web site is in the source info:

Go to a post office, they should have reapplication forms, at least in cities they do, can't help if you're in a rural area cuz i know those post offices suck.
