Try taking a less extreme position. Not all republicans are "anti-american" and not all are "extremist." There are many people out there that identify themselves as republicans that probably share many of your opinions.

Also, recognize that there are loonies in the democratic party too. You can't criticize another group without recognizing your own group's weaknesses.

Finally, discuss the issues concretely. By taking an attack position on a vague idea, this creates animosity. Discuss your positions concretely and clearly without attacking the other party.
