Varies some on school districts. Usual one is thee child would need to turn 5 before the school year starts. So the child born Oct 13th. 2006 would start K in August 2012.
Don't fret that the child is on the older side of 5 it as a rule works out better for them.

Most public schools have a cut off date. The child must have turned five by...Aug 15th of the upcoming school year. Check w/ the local school.

Private schools are much more forgiving and prefer to conduct a "readiness test."

Based on your example - your child will be the one of the oldest in his/her class because of the birthday and would start kindergarten Fall 2012 a month or two shy of 6th birthday.

I believe the cutoff date is usually in September, but I could be wrong. My son was born in December, so I know when he'll be starting. Your child will probably be about to turn six when he starts in the Fall. My best friend in High School's birthday was September 27th, and she was nearly a year older then me (my birthday's in May). She may have been held back for another reason for all I know, though.

You'll need to call the school district that your child would be starting in; they usually have all the regulations laid out already to determine the cut-offs for who is in and who isn't old enough yet for each year's class.

It is really dependent on where you are, because school systems have such varying schedules now.

You need to call a local school (that has a kindergarten class) and ask what the cut off date is for age. Most school districts have a cut-off, and the school will know.

fall 2012 in most areas. but since the cutoff date is only a couple of months before the child could probably test into kingergarten. my b day is oct. 12 and i had to wait until i was almost six i was always the oldest kid plus i physically matured quicker than the other kids so it was embaressing.

Check with your local school district. Different states have different rules for starting.
