Hey there! I was in your very same situation and asked a very similar Q. If you go to my Q&A and find my same Q., go check all the answers people gave me. They were helpful (though I didn't get one yet).

I have a 60GB video iPod because I travel a lot.

It depends on what you're looking for in a music player. Do you just want music for when you're jogging or walking to class? Then a video iPod is too much.
Do you HAVE 60GB of music and movies? Then you don't want a 30GB 'pod, you need a bigger one. You know?

The 60GB ones have a longer battery life, 25 hours playing just music, about 3 playing movies. The 30GB is half that, so how often can you recharge it?

If you get a new one, make sure you get a good case for it that includes a screen-protector. The new screens are like Wax, and mark very easily. I have an iSkin, and it is AWESOME. It's sexy, smart, fits the iPod style and protects every part of your pod.

Good luck!

Just bought my first iPod Nano. Depends how many songs you want to be able to store and if the size of the screen is important. My Nano is 1gb and can hold up to 250 songs, but has a smaller screen than the regular iPod. Are you a student? If you order via www.apple.co you can save 10% too.. that's what I did. Check out apple.com for any details.

I have an Ipod and I love it.
I went all out and got the 60 gig (which now holds more than my computer)
I have Movies on it for when I travel
I have my entire music catalog backed up on it.
The only down side is I treat it like fine china. It is constantly on my mind due to its cost. I have a hard clear plastic case around it. I also took a few adhesive covers from my palm pilot and placed them over the screen to prevent scratches. Over all it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. :)

When I went to get mine during the holidays last year, 30 GB were like selling out. I went to best buy and all they had were the 60 GB's. The sales person was trying to convince me to get it, but at what cost?...It would've been 100$ more, but now, considering the lifespan of technology when newer models come out, perhaps it'll go down?....

As for thickness, 30 GB are slim and sexy, especially the black ones (yeah, I have this one). I already have about 30 clips of video, one of which is an 1hr long of a spanish version of RENT (first act) with still room to boot for episodes of LOST, THe Office, That's So Raven, and music videos from Green Day, The Cranberries, Tori Amos, even iMovies that I made myself! You can even get videos from Google and download clips that you can transfer onto your iPod! (Sounds like fun already-heee)..,
That's not all...
I do love music after all. I have most of my Death Cab for Cutie Collection on there (in addition to videos purchased from iTunes). I have several playlists into different categories. I even have some of my own songs i've transferred from GarageBand ;) Sweet!...Of course, there are the accessories ;)

I got me an AV cable which can marry your TV to your iPod so you can watch the video clips (that is if you're a video afficianado) on your flat screen or whatever that has video and audio inputs. It's great for sharing with others what's on your iPod...(note: it will drain your battery, so plug up)...

Of course, the difference of battery life is an issue...Go 60GB if you plan on going gung ho with videos and music...(The Best BUy sales person said she bought the 60GB coz she downloads often...me well, in spite of the above that seems a lot, I've got 400 songs and 40 vids and have yet to reach maximum memory. I haven't even reached 1/3 of it yet...!

Oh yeah. And of course, there's pictures. Make your own slide show presentation of family friends or whatever. Again, great for parties....Oh, and iPods are great DJ's too. they've got mixers for them that take over choosing the songs for you....

And as much as always when investing in something fragile and expensive, guard and protect. (I nearly was accosted by someone on the street...but if you surround yourself with other iPod people-seek the white earphones-you should be fine-smile). I bought a case for 9.99 at Hot Topic that brazenly has The Ramons emblazoned on it...It gives my iPod character...So make sure your ipod cover reflects your personality...if not, just make sure it's durable....

Enjoy your iPod hunting ;)

buy an apple ipod fifth generation 30gb (video) This is a decent one its better then getting a 60 gb , because you will run out of memory on your computer before you run out of memory on your 60 gb which is totally unnecessary. While with the 30gb if its full you obviously aren't listening/ viewing all the stuff. It is an all a around excellent choice because you get the best choice for the lowest amount of money. Try Costco.

The 30 GB video iPod seems to be the best deal. If you are a student or teacher, you get a discount through apple's website. It's definitly worth it. I love my iPod.

It really depends on how you will use it...
If you just want to play music, I recommend the 4GB Nano... it's size is awsome and it holds 1000 songs. It's portability is freaking unreal. I also hooked it up to my car stereo and bring my mp3's with me on the road...
iPod... it's a good thing.
