I played in symphony for many years and believe they all play a vital role. However, if you have to leave one instrument out of an orchestra (an orchestra, not a symphony), I would leave out the viola. It's a shame, but it makes no sense to leave out any of the others.

I guess it all depends on what pieces they're going to play ...
And can I have more of another instrument to cover their parts?
I agree the triangle would be a good choice, but I don't think that's what you meant - so I'll have to go with Viola (don't tell anybody I ever said that - the violist will beat me senseless with their bows.)

Well if you're looking for the one that has to be left out because you can only have so many or something I'd pick the bass clarinet only because the bassoon could cover the part. If you wanna take something out just for fun take out the violins, cause they're annoying. LOL

Oboe, in my opinion! It really depends on the repertoire you are performing. It's next to impossible to remove a stringed instrument, but the bass can be removed and the part doubled at the octave by the cello.

No. They do even however ought to have an theory of the colour that the tool supplies you and its variety. I doubt any composer of a symphony ought to play all units that they lined of their compositions.
