Well you 1st need to decide what you are going to use it for. If you are going to just use it to shoot with your dad then a 9mm is good choice, nines are also a good choice for self defense. You need to go to a gun store then look at a few different ones to see which one will fit your hand the best. A few that i recommend you looking at are Browning Hi Power, Glock 17 and Glock 19, Beretta 92 FS and Beretta 92 centurion or any of the Smith and Wesson 9mms. All of these are great guns and will last a long time. If you are looking for one of these that are very low mantense then the glocks are what you want. They are very durable and have special coating that make them less susceptible to rust. None of these guns are prown to jam and are accurate.

I love my Glocks. Never had a problem with them. But my suggestion would be a Springfield Armory 1911. Basically any 1911 from a decent company. But why spend the extra moola for a name like Kimber or Para. When SA is just as good.
Can't go wrong with a M1911

I own a beretta 92fs and I love it more than most handguns.
I also like the sig 226 but it isnt as accurate as my beretta is at longer distances.

i dont like 9mms because they are too weak, i prefer a 45 or 38, dont buy a glock, they jam too easy, s&w is fine, if you wont be using it very often get a revolver, they wont jam, but if you'll be using it often and need a larger capacity go with a semi-auto.

The best thing is to try and find a range that you can rent different weapons to see what you like.
Personally, I prefer a 1911

I love S & Ws preferably revolvers used in competition, barral doesn't heat up as quickly and there is less of a kick.

I prefer none of them, but I am a little opinionated, as a Vietnam Veteran. But, ask around your local gun dealers, they should be glad to advise you.
