Porn is a form of entertainment, and like almost anything, it can be addictive for some people. Most sex researchers and therapists agree that for many people porn can be a healthy, normal aspect of erotic life. It is easy to make simplistic and judgmental statements about porn, and the people who enjoy it. Take buttercup’s response, for example. She says “it puts you in the gutter.” Notice that she in answering on behalf of the human race, but she has no actual knowledge of the issue. She does not know me, for example, so how does she know what effect porn has on me? We currently do not have reliable laws of psychology like we do for physics or chemistry. She talks as if the effects of porn are as predictable as the laws of gravity. She is simply wrong. Anyone with a background in science and even a little knowledge of psychology will tell you that statements of that sort belie blatant ignorance and deep prejudice. She cannot rationally say that porn makes me feel “dirty and sleazy” because she does not know me, and she cannot draw on any legitimate scientific theory or credible philosophical tradition to make such blanket claims.

Sorry, buttercup, I don’t mean to rag on you so intensely and I don’t really blame you for your beliefs – the majority of people would probably agree with you. But this same old song and dance is found ad nauseam in American culture and I think it takes a bit of drama to slap the majority out of their stupor. People need to start thinking for themselves rather than simply parroting majority views. Biological nature is fundamentally diverse. VARIATION is the law in biology. Different people are different and you cannot reasonably or ethically proclaim what is best for others in matters where there are no accepted scientific theories to guide us. Sex is a powerful drive, and is deeply entrenched in our emotional lives, so it is not surprising that porn can be addictive or compulsive for many people. And we all know that too much of anything can be problematic. Nevertheless, there is no reason to think that porn in moderation is necessarily harmful. I would even suspect that for some people, porn might be just what they need to find healthy mental and spiritual balance in their lives.

If you do a web search you will find plenty of sites warning us about the devastating effects of porn on individuals and society, but if you pay attention, you will notice that these pages are produced primarily by religious groups or anti-porn feminists. They do NOT represent the views of psychologists, sex researchers, or sex therapists. And, by the way, there are also a great many pro-sex feminists who disagree with the anti-porn folks. Christian-based groups in particular are flooding the media with anti-porn hype, but this is driven by religious doctrine, not logic, science, or even common sense. Below I offer a few links showing alternative views:

No, it isn't addictive, but viewing and reading it can certainly be habit-forming. The term "addictive" is widely misunderstood and mis-applied. Nor are people who view and read porn "perverts". They're mostly perfectly normal people who enjoy the gifts mother nature bestowed upon all of us. That does not mean that there are no perverts who view and read porn; there are such people throughout society. It's been proven more than once that banning porn or otherwise trying to suppress it won't reduce the incidence of misbehaviors having to do with sex. Nor, in most cases, will viewing porn interfere with normal growth and development in adolescents.
An argument can be made that in some venues, the production of porn involves abuse, but the solution is not to attempt to ban porn, it's to advance and protect the status of women and children everywhere. If a woman wishes to earn money by appearing in porn pics or films, she should be able to, but of her own free will, and be free to cease that activity anytime she should choose to.

How to avoid porn addiction on the Internet

1. Consider installing porn content filtering software( Strongly Recommend NetDog ,you can get it from www.netdogsoft.com ) on your computer. it will help to protect you from stumbling into pornography by accident, That's important.

2. Do not try to guess what the address of a Web page is. Many pornographic sites have similar addresses of respectable sites. For example www . whitehouse . com is a porn site. The real address is www. whitehouse . gov

3. Never click on Web site addresses that you receive in an unsolicited email.

4. Do not open attachments that come in email that are unsolicited.

5. Use filtered search engines or reputable directories to find the information you need.

6. Do not search for terms like girls. Think before you enter a search term.

Stick with reputable sites.
If something looks questionable, don't let curiosity get the best of you. Delete it or close the window.

Porn is extremely addictive to some people. There are many many perverts that use porn and also many many non-perverts who have simply become habitual porn users over time.......its really a tricky issue.

In any case, its very bad for you no matter why you use it.

Yes, to both questions. Too bad people don't have
better things to do in a Nation that has so much other
decent activities to offer it's citizens. Porn puts you in
the gutter and makes you feel dirty and sleazy. What
a wasted life.

What kind of porn? Internet porn,or porn on videos you watch at home in the privacy of your bedroom? I guess it would depend on how much time you spend on them each day and all you think about is getting back to watching more.

I don't believe in sex addiction. Most people who look at porn are men looking for sex without commitment.
