If I defragment, will that actually work? I tried it a couple of times but I am not sure as to how defragmentation will help my computer run faster.

It compresses files and stuff like that.

Try buying an external USB memory device, they free up your PC and made mine about 200% faster.

Well the best way to free up memory is to use less applications that are intensive. So if your computer goes is slow, press CLT+ALT+DEL and end some of your applications which will free up memory if you have a PC

Defragment is slightly different as this is done to make sure that when your computer access your hardrive it does not get held up by fragmented files (these are files which are scattered all over your hard drive by installing/uninstalling applications). You should defragment you drive periodicaly as it makes your computer faster overall.

DEFRAG:

"It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk in order to store the pieces of each file close together and in order (contiguously). It also attempts to create large regions of free space using compaction, to impede the return of fragmentation." -Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defragment

as the above explains as the data is closer together it takes a shorter amount of time to find it!

you should also run CrapCleaner (before defrag) to get rid of temporary junk, unneeded on the Hard Drive.
use the Issues clean aswell, as a clean registry will also speed up a slow system

MEMORY:
Memory is a seperate component (not affected by defrag) if you system runs software/games slowly add new RAM(memory) to the system , if you dont know how bring it to your local PC repair shop and let them know you need more RAM(memory) and they should be able to help you.

If running XP i recomend 512 - 1024Mb of RAM (Memory)

Hard Drive Space:
If running low on space add an additional Harddrive

The USB Stick IDEA:
This will NOT speed up your PC, it is more like a smaller harddrive you can carry arround with you, I don see how that can add 200% speed to your system!

the software IDEA:
this may provide a small benifit, all it usually does it tweak your swap file, which can be dont for free relitivly easly by hand, but not necessary on XP.

My husband fixes computers for a living, and he always recommends buying more. Its relatively cheap, and improves the performance greatly. He usually recommends 512 mb minimum for a normal user, more if you are planning on installing a lot of software/games. An easy place to buy from is crucial.com. They ask for your computer info, and then tell you what memory works with it. Their prices are very competitive as well.

sure., there is extra advantageous than one variety of reminiscence and often pc illiterate persons confuse the two significant varieties. RAM and HDD. Hardrives are basically area for saving archives. think of of it as an empty room to fill with packing containers.. at the same time as the RAM is extra like the scale of an engine (or truly the gas, the scale being the processor velocity). So in case you like your pc load swifter and run courses swifter you like extra RAM. You mentioned you have 2 gigs this is plenty yet one extra 2 could make the worldwide of difference. Beofre you get all gung hoe and purchase extra RAM however you ought to be particular that your mom board can settle for that lots RAM. flow to a keep and tell them you opt to work out in case you have extra RAM extra .. in case your 80 Gig HD is working out of area you ought to enhance yet this won't make it swifter in any respect (nicely there is onboard RAM on HD's often 4-8 MB's even yet it truly is minimum) I 'll end perplexing you.. RAM = swifter HD area = area
