Respectable?? NO. Lucrative?? Yes. The problem here is that business is about making money, and making money is the only concern. Porn is degrading and exploitive, but you can buy plenty of respectability with the huge amounts of money that a porn star rakes in.

I once read the book, Wonder Bread & Ecstasy: The Life and Death of Joey Stefano. It chronicled the very sleazy type of porn being made in the 1970s.
I think the porn industry is less disreputable than it used to be. Some actors and actresses have leap-frogged to mainstream movies and tv. One example is Traci Lords, who was a star on the Sci-Fi Channel hit "First Wave". For the sake of being discrete, I won't mention a couple mainstream Hollywood actors and actresses who reportedly started out in "soft porn".
The worst kind of porn is the type that was done in the former Eastern Bloc countries of Europe after the fall of Communism, around 1992-1996. Many young girls and boys became caught up in the turmoil of the era and left their disfunctional homes for big city life.
They soon became caught up in the very seedy porn business, fueled in large part by a thriving market for porn in Germany. There are several movies about the subject, such as "Body Without Soul".
However, this type of exploitation has diminished considerably as the economies of these former Soviet bloc countries has improved.
Thank god.

It's a sin business. And quite a bit naughtier than booze or tobacco. If I was in the porn industry, and someone at a party asked what I do, I wouldnt say porn. Unless I thought it would help me somehow.

Porn is degrading mainly to women because it cheapens them into sex objects destroys their self respect. The average girl who becomes a sucessful porn star leaves 5 or 6 unsucessful girls who were either raped, drugged or infested with STDs in order for some producer to create his fantasy film. Yes, there's a lot of money involved but what if it wre your daughter or girlfriend who was lured into that business and you saw her on a DVD getting gang-raped by a group paid actors?

See when it comes to business one should not be bothered all these stuff.
now, as an individual context you can debate if it is respectable or not.
anyways, Its a sad area of work for the women there, for those who are enjoying the money, they don't give a damn. they are partying out in the best of the places the world has to offer.
overall rating - poor
