Depending on the age of the laptop and its condition, if the laptop gets very hot, the fan may not be working properly, which is detrimental to the overall performance of the laptop. It IS normal to become warm. I leave mine on all of the time (although it goes into sleep mode automatically) and haven't had a problem, but my husband has another laptop that won't play a DVD properly because the fan doesn't cool the laptop enough.

We leave ours on constantly, with the occasional restart when necessary (i.e. for updates, if they start to slow down for whatever reason). Its not bad for the laptop, as it goes to "sleep" when its not in use. As long as you are keeping it on a desk or somewhere that won't block the vents for the internal fan (which keeps it cool), you will be fine.

It would be bad to have it on for a long time if your fan didn't work. You can leave it on stand by for as long as you want and it would 't be messed up. You shouldn't have it on for more than 8 hours, even with a fan

You can keep it on as long as it doesn't overheat. Whenever you aren't using your laptop put it into standby or hibernation to give it time to cool off. If you are worried about it overheating try using the program CPUcool or FANspeed to monitor the temp.

I don't know--but I do know that after about an hour it starts to get really hot and so probably nothing more than an hour!
