Soil may be classed as acid, neutral, or alkaline. Soil with much lime, or wood ashes would be apt to be alkaline. "Sour" soil, or soil with piles of oak leaves or pine needles would be apt to be acid. Those are only rough estimates. I want a way to check soil acidity or alkalinity using common household items.

I dont think litmus paper or liquid solution is a common household item, unless you have a fish tank or a hot tub. That said, you can get either in any garden or fish shop, super cheap. Or you could splurge $20 and get a PH testing meter on Ebay, or maybe Yahoo Shopping (some garden store prices will require you to sell your firstborn).

With the meter, you just wipe the probe with a "special" cloth to clean it and insert into the ground. You will have a reliable answer in a minute or two.

take a soil sample to you local county AG agent and they will test for you
there are several cheap testers on the market, check your local nursery
if it rains a lot where your are you will gave a acid soil
live in a dry semi-desert area it will be alkaline

there are soil testing kits that you could buy at any garden center. this will show you how much acid you have in your soil.
