The name is from the Greek MASCULINE name "Leander" from "Leandros" meaning "lion (of a) man" (leon [lion] + andros [man]). The implication is that the person with this name is as bold as a lion. (The Germanic equivalent would be Leon(h)ard.)

The shift to "Leandra" did NOT take place in Greek itself. (There is NOT a Greek word "andra", meaning "woman", and so "Leandra" does not literally mean "lion-woman." That's a sloppy statement, of the sort unfortunately common in 'baby name' books.) Rather, it is simply a common practice to substitute a feminine ending for a masculine one (in this case an -a for the original -os) to create a feminine form of a word or name.
