Because the government makes a lot of money from taxing cigarettes and therefore they will not stop making it. They have to have money for wars, exotic trips, etc. Also, though, there is the whole prohibition thing....or the drug war. Outlawing a thing that people want will not stop people from growing, processing, selling, or buying it. The whole market will just go underground, increasing crime, etc. Prime example: marijuana. If the government were smart, they would tax marijuana the way they do cigs: it would make them lots of money, decrease crime and the number of people in prison for drug related crimes, and make us all a lot happier. Point is, the government doesn't really care whats good or bad for us....they care about whether or not they can tax and control it for the good of their pockets.

Cigarette companies know their product is bad for you, but they like their money more than they care about their customers. Tobacco is VERY addictive, so don't ever start smoking. This is the voice of experience speaking.

Because the tobacco industry is greedy, they could care less about the consequences that their products produces to the overall health of their consumers. They make billions of dollars every year, they're not about to shutdown to a few protests...

Cigarettes are both a historical pasttime and cultural icon in many countries. They are also relatively easy to produce and consume. You can smoke just as you can drink soda.

Because in the free world, people have freedom of choice. If people want to smoke, and in their judgement the pleasures of smoking outweigh the health risks, who are YOU or anyone else to take that decision away from them?

Cigarettes are bad for people and the makers put chemicals in them to get especially young people addicted to them. They do it to make greedy money.

It's like wine or computer games. It is bad, when excessive and since it has been a industry already, it can not be wiped out in one day.
