Simple: Sunburns hurt. Also, the skin turns red, or even blisters. A sunburn will begin to hurt within about 4 hours of getting it and will continue to hurt for days afterward.

The skin will turn red and tighten up. Depending on the severity of the burn it may blister and peel after a few days. Gnerally sunburned skin is over sensitive to warm water.
See the attached URl for some additional symptoms.

Is your skin reddish and warm to the touch? Does your skin also hurt when you touch it or bump it against something? You've also got to consider how long were you in the sun. Sometimes, your skin will start peeling after a couple days. I typically don't sunburn, but when my skin get shiny and starts to peel, I know I had sunburn.

Your skin is red, radiates heat, and hurts when you scratch it. Sunburnts get redder later so you don't know you have a sunburn until like an hour after your out of the sun.

OUCH! it HURTS!! If you don't put sunblock on, and if you stay in the sun for a certain period of time, and if someone tries to touch you where you are sunburned, then you will know that you have sunburn.
It can be quite painful depending upon how much time you spent in the sun without sunblock.

That spot hurts when it touches something, especially water, or if it's red or if you feel kind of under the weather, like tired. Those are usually good indications.
If that's the case, treat it.

You will be red, you will feel hot, and it will hurt when you touch it or hot water hits it. And some late late signs are peeling.
