The traditional jersey color of the national team (as well as of all Italian teams and athletes, except in motor sports) is sky blue (azzurro, in Italian), and therefore national team members are nicknamed Azzurri.

Because that is the color of the National Team, called "Azzurri".
That is an historical tradition: before the creation of the Italian Republic, the Italian Regal Family (Savoia) had color "azzurro" (kind of blue) in their flag and that color was adopted by the soccer National Team to respect the Regal tradition.
Since then the color has been kept in the Italian shirt, even though it is not a color present in their National flag.

because the water is blue and italians are expert divers... plus, their jerseys are blue! i have nothing against italians or their skill level as professional footballers, but the crying and play-acting is sickening... a shameful way to play a sport!
