I don't like John Wayne much; the roles he played were steriotypical, macho and frequently racist, and he may have acted like a great hero, but that was only on film. It seems kind of stupid to solve everything by killing eveyone. What d'ye think?

I loved John Wayne. He represented America, and yes he was my hero. And it wasn't just on film. He made alot of his films to help lift the moral of the American people. He couldn't join the service, so he did what he could. Personally, I think it's unamerican not to like John Wayne. I don't recall any of his movies being racist. And when he was sick and in the hospital he would visit the other patients and try to cheer them up. What do I think about John Wayne? I think he was the best, and there will never be another like him. I am not old. And he is still my hero.

OK, you're allowed to not like John Wayne, and yes, he was steriotypically macho in most of his roles, but rarely racist. I believe it's called ACTING and yes, it's definitely stupid to solve everything by killing everyone. So, what's your point? By the way, as long as we're playing with your criteria here, What do you think of George W. Bush?

So you don't like John Wayne. That's too bad. Well I don't like most of the movies made today because they are so phoney. Most kids today don't like anything from the past and it's a shame. Those of us who were raised up in the days of John Wayne loved every movie he ever played in because he was a great actor and played every part to the fullest. I don't believe in hero's but if I did.... John Wayne would be mine.

Wow, you really must hate blockbuster movies. Yes he was stereotypical. You also have to remember that in his day actors did more of their own stunts and he was a superstar in his day. Movies have always been a way to escape from reality for the audiences. If the audience didn't show up, the film flopped. John Wayne played characters who were bigger then life and the audiences loved it. Look at Arnold, Clint, The Rock, Vin Diesel, any of whom could fit the same type of profile.

I think John Wayne is dead.. and, I think a LOT of the movies he starred in died MANY years ago!
Remember, he was playing a role!... IF you think that his personality can be attributed to the roles he played, you must think him a GREAT actor! Also, it was the times; you're talking about 40, 50 years ago.. and, I hate to tell you this, but, the entire country was racist (at least) to a point! Believe me, I grew up in this era.. thankfully, my parents did not tell the jokes I heard other places so I suppose I was raised better (more like you kids today)..
I never did like or could stand to sit through any of his movies.. But, it was him, ACTING,.. not speaking for himself!

Simply because the Duke could act does not automatically pigeonhole him as holding true to the same ideals and beliefs of the characters that he was given to portraying (again, the time periods that most of his films were released in and reflected were those that were definitely not pristine or examples of paradise or peace overall).
My personal opinion of the man is that he was a damned fine actor. I have seen no other person able to argue otherwise, even despite the fact that they have no personal taste for the films he had commonly taken lead roles in.

Well, I believe John Wayne was a hero for his particular era. The heroes in this era of film seem to still be killing everyone...not too much difference if you ask me...
