The ref was horrible and completly ruined the game for the U.S. The red card for the US players was unfair, I have seen worse not get carded.

As an old qualified referee for the fans there are 2 rules Rule No 1 The referee is always right. Rule No 2 If you think that the referee is wrong read rule No1. This particular referee did not have a very good day, however we can't blame him totally both teams played very poorly. We only can hope that the referees in the coming games will be better. Most of the time referee's bad calls don't change the result, however in this case he was very close to favour Italy more than the USA. Also please think about the pressure that they are under and I can tell you is not easy to make always the right decision in 2 seconds. There is one more important fact, most of the media, supporters and players DON'T Know the rules and before we can criticised we should get the rules book read it and understand the rules. I am TOTALLY sure that most of people will not answer correctly 90% of the questions of a referee qualification examination.

If you like soccer, I hope you UNDERSTAND soccer too.
Soccer is a game where not necessarily the best Team wins. In addition, the World Cup is a very unique tournament in which tension and "points strategy" are very important factor.
Yes, Italy may have not played the best game, but if you look at the stats (go the FIFA official site) you'll noticed few important facts: shots on goal, fouls, corner kicks...
Plus the big argument about the referee: a lot of USA's fans, blinded by their ignorance on understanding soccer, are complaining about the ref e his calls.
In reality, who really has to complain is Italy. Here are some facts that can be confirmed if you have recorded the game:
- In the 5th min. Totti was given a yellow card while he did not even touched the opponent
- In the 27th min., when USA scored, the ref called a foul of Cannavaro on Reyna which it was a perfect tackle on the ball. From that foul USA scored (own goal Zaccardo)
- De Rossi red card was legitimate: he elbowed McBride and he deserved to be ejected.
- All the first half, both Gilardino and Luca Toni received "special attention" from Mastroeni, Pope and Onyewu.
- Mastroeni red card was legitimate: that foul is automatic red card.
- In the whole game, at least 4 offsides called against Italy were NOT offside (few to remember called to Luca Toni and Iaquinta). FYI, usually calling a player offside, that player has good chances on scoring goals.
- The goal scored by Beasly on the 66th min., had McBride in front of Buffon, and he even made a move with his right leg to disturb the goalkeeper action. In soccer, that is NOT a goal, but a foul for Italy. So, that was one of the few good calls.
- On the other hand, in the min. 36, when Gattuso newly entered scored, Luca Toni was stopped for an inexistent offside: that goal should have been allowed.
- Someone complaining about Pope's red card??? Helloooo... he committed so many fouls the firs half, what would you have expected? The foul he committed on Gilardino (min. 47) was a yellow card foul, but because he was already "booked", automatically the red card was legitimate.
Are the above points enough?
So, for people complaining I say to be happy about the tie, and at the end, who is going further it is a better team but do not complain about things that do not make any sense.
To all the others, just read who are the finalists of the World Cup in the last 40 years (you can start from 1970...) then you will open your eyes on who will be in the final this year too.
Basil B:
If you are a "QUALIFIED" referee... then I am Maradona.
Your post shows exactly how contorted is the mind of a "qualified referee"!!!
First of all your "2 rules" concept is so pathetic, because in soccer the referee has to apply the rules belonging to the laws of the game (that is 101 referee).
If you have taken the time to read my post, probably you wouldn't have made ridiculous comment such as "however we can't blame him totally both teams played very poorly".
In addition, your contorted way of looking at the game, made you say "Most of the time referee's bad calls don't change the result, however in this case he was very close to favor Italy more than the USA".
Referee's call CAN EASLY change the course of the game: pk, offside and non-called fouls falsify the correctness’s of a game. About the ref. favor Italy... read my post... and open your eyes.
Last of all, you are more than welcome to ask me "questions of a referee qualification examination" and I can ensure you that I AM NOT on your exaggerated 90%!!!

The ref was in some controversy a long time ago too (announcers). But there is no way that 9-10 helped the US at all. It just tired us out even more. And then there was that "obstruction" call, if that didnt happen it would have been 2-1 and would have settled everything.

Even the announcers stated that the referee was inept! What's up with that! Too many yellow and red cards! The announcers stated that that game would probably be his last! Go Figure!!!
